Vivian Curl is a strategic and effective communicator who thrives on helping companies and individuals meet their corporate communication needs and philanthropic goals. Philanthropy Curl’s strong broadcast media expertise led to a freelance consulting position with Valerie Campbell & Associates (VCA); a well-respected firm that specializes in philanthropy, strategic planning, and facilitation. With VCA, Curl pursued her commitment to supporting organizations, and foundations to develop their vision, exceed their fundraising goals, and ensure their long term sustainability. For more than three years, Curl supported the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation in Alliston, Ontario by developing, managing, and launching their $5 million Capital Campaign. The Here's to Your Good Health! Capital Campaign surpassed its target, enabling the purchase and installation of a CT scanner, a first for the community. Curl also provided support on other capital projects, including the Memorial Hospital Foundation in Bowmanville, and the Crofton House School in British Columbia. The VCA team also facilitated the Foundations of Naturopathic Medicine Editors Retreat in Seattle, Washington. Curl’s current clients include Self-Help Resource Centre and Sheena’s Place. Curl’s commitment to philanthropy began when she created and operated an annual auction of Gund Teddy Bears individually dressed by 60 international designers including Bob Mackie, Oscar de la Renta, Thierry Mugler, Brian Bailey, and Franco Mirabelli. The Ready-to-Wear Bear Auction ran for several years, and generated more than $125,000 for The Hospital for Sick Children’s Herbie Fund in Toronto. Broadcast Media, Strategic Communications, and Public Relations A dynamic producer, editor, and writer with 15 years of experience in Canadian television, Curl's insight into how the ‘media works and thinks’ led to an independent consulting business. Curl has worked with Senior Executives primarily in the healthcare field on branding, key messaging, crisis management, and preparation for on camera media interviews. Currently, she leads seminars on how to work with the media during a crisis, and attract media attention. Curl writes strategic media releases, and develops and manages public relations campaigns for a variety of companies, and public relations firms. Curl developed her media skills while working at CTV News in Toronto, where she worked as a senior manager, creative producer, editor, and writer for 15 years, and covered all aspects of broadcast news from News Assignment Editor to Features Producer for CTV News at Six to Newsroom Manager. Curl developed and produced the nightly health segment “Lifetime”. Working closely with the medical community, and local hospital staff, the segment brought important issues, studies, and diseases to light. The segment garnered significant ratings, and was placed in a pivotal spot during the newscast to maximize Neilson and BBM ratings. Curl’s feature on “Junk Food High” raised awareness of the state of high school cafeterias, and unhealthy menu choices. The series won Curl the coveted Edward R. Murrow International Award for Best News Feature Series by the Radio and Television News Directors Association. The Ontario provincial government has now banned junk food from all public schools. Curl created and produced “By Design”, a weekly fashion segment that primarily profiled Canadian designers, and retailers. Curl’s strong alliance with the fashion industry helped to secure clothing contra for all anchors at CTV News. The sponsorship program saved the company $300,000 annually.
